Farming Pacific oysters using the spat-on-shell system in a shallow area in the subtropical coast of Brazil

The Santa Catarina Island Bay (SCIB) contributes with the largest production of cultivated oysters in Brazil, which is almost entirely based on hatchery produced cultchless oyster spat, whose metamorphosis induced by an epinephrine solution. A scale experiment was carried out to analyze technical feasibility spat-on-shell system SCIB. for 47 weeks, involving internal phase, larval settlement, and external encompassing nursery growth. Nursery periods varied according experimental treatments: T3W - 3 weeks; T5W 5 T12W 12 weeks. showed lower survival during two-week period shortly after transfer cultch from grow-out likely linked premature exposure spat strings predators such as fish. 12-week best results clusters a median 6 animals 11.4 g meat per at end period. Future studies could verify whether longer or alternative methods avoid can outperform these results.
